In 2005, Alex Tew launched the Million Dollar Homepage in August and successfully made a million dollars after about a year, and completely selling every single pixel on the 1 million pixel graph. The success was assessed to be due to the following facts:

1) Brand new idea to advertise websites using a different layout and approach (selling pixels).
2) Timely press release and coverage.
3)  Its not just a new idea, it is also a funny and unique idea that catches attention.
4) Since it was the first, there is limited space on for such ads. The milliondollarhomepage probably become a "hot property" during that one-year before other sites start to create "more space" (hence lesser value).

Ever since the success of the MDHP, many sites have sprung up hoping to achieve the same feat but with lesser success because it is no longer a fresh idea. A single page with only 1 million pixels is worth a lot more than thousands of websites each with a million pixel.

Furthermore, with so many people selling pixels over the internet, the argument now is that the advertising money is better spent on a banner space at a related, high traffic website.

Anyone can start the million dollar home page easily. You an even start a home page with several Tabbed pages of million dollar homepages
using a free script provided here.

While most people try to repeat the same idea, Alex Tew (and probably his friends) set up the Pixelotto but with more features. Instead of US$1 for a pixel, the price is US$2 per pixel with a minimum purchase of 100 pixels at US$200. At that price, you get a small box which you can hardly put anything readable on the graphics except for the call-out (mouse-over it). So the whole million pixel board will be worth US$2million when it is fully sold.

The reason why it has the word "lotto" is because there is a lucky draw for those that click on the advertising links. Pixelotto will pay US$1million to the winner selected from the pool of people who signed up to click and visit the sites. Anyone can register and participate in the lotto for free - this is supposed to help drive traffic to the site.

It is probably a good idea, but the response so far has not be great and the advertising fees paid so far is still less than US$200,000, less than 10% subscription.

So if you are still thinking of spending time to start the same type of business, think again. There is no need to repeat what others have succeeded or failed.
