We found a website specializing in various clone scripts. If you are
still pondering which clone script to try out for your new project,
consider checking this out and test the various demos to get a feel of
what you need.
As with any script that attempts to "look-like" a major site, note that running one such script isn't as simple as it seem. At this point of writing, this site has various clone scripts, such as scripts that look like rapidshare.com clone ($29.99), imageshack.us clone ($29.99), getacoder.com clone ($99), hotscripts.com clone ($29.99), facebook.com clone ($299 for platinum version) and more.
If we consider what a huge success the original site was, we thought that it wouldn't harm if we can just have 10% of that success using one of these cheap scripts. However, we need to know if the scripts are really fully featured, so we tested one of the more expensive script and yet awfully plain - facebook clone.

Signing up was a breeze. We were required to confirm our email before we are allowed to access our login area. In the member's area, navigation was quite simple and we noticed that it includes quite a number of similar features such as work and educational details, invite a friend, networking and internal mailing system.

Unfortunately, we were not able to compare a completed facebook profile with networks with the actual ones we have
at the real facebook.com. This is the basic version, and we wondered how the platinum version would be like. If you would like to try these out, you can do it here at facebook clone demo.
As most of the clone scripts are used to clone the major sites, what concerns most of us is whether the scripts can handle a large database. The design of the backend is important, because once the membership or database of the site grows, it has to be able to withstand a high number of connections. A dedicated server might be useful for a start, but not necessary when starting out. When the traffic is high, the returns from the site would naturally allow the owner to upgrade without a need to fork out additional money from his pocket. And there is also an option of selling away the complete site with the script after it has a large pool of users.
Just like the Alibaba clone script we mentioned in the other article, the most important thing is not just about how effective the script is. This IS important but an exact clone is useless unless you are willing to commit more to market the site. In next challenge is "Why would people need another similar site when the original is good enought?" What most clone scripts do well is that they struggle to do exactly like the original, but as a customer (who is thinking about buying the script), you will also need to consider if you can provide more value than the original site. Think about what is lacking in the original site, and create value or focus different (e.g. different group/market).
You can check out the other scripts at http://www.greatclone.com, like this one, an eBay clone script.
