A very rich Chinese man was very old and dying. He got together with
his most trusted friends one day, who happened to be a devoted Priest,
a helpful Doctor, and a smart Banker. The rich Chinese man told his
friends to do a favor for him when he dies.
"Here are three suitcases, each containing $1 million, one for each of you. As I don't wish to go into the afterlife without any money, please help to burn these money as offering to me at the temple where I die." It is a Chinese custom to burn "Heaven bank note" for the dead or God, but the rich Chinese man prefers real cash.
The three friends agreed, and took the suitcases. Soon, the Rich Man died and the devoted Priest, the helpful doctor and the smart Banker went to burn the money at the temple as promised.
As the Priest opened the suitcase and pulled out large bundles of notes for the burning, he could not help but confessed, "I would like
to
confess that I find it a waste to burn away these money. My temple
needs some repair work done badly, so I took (sigh). . . I took $50,000
to take
care of it. I am sure our rich friend would not mind helping the
temple." He quickly threw all the remaining money into the fire and
chanted a short prayer.
The Doctor was stunned and he said, "Since you have decided to admit it, I must also confess that I... that I took $100,000 to buy several new and expensive medical equipment for my hospital. I am very sure that our rich friend would not mind using the money to save more life." So he opened the suitcase and emptied large bundles of money into the fire.
Both the Doctor and the Priest were relieved that they had confessed, and started to notice that the Banker did not have the suitcase on his hand.
The Banker said, "Oh, I will send him a check instead. The money is deposited into my bank account for investment... I am pretty sure our good friend would prefer that I burn him money every year with those investment earnings. I can double that money every year." So he took out a check from his pocket and threw into the fire.
